How to Choose a Slot Game: 6 Things to Check First
To choose a slot game, open its info screen before you spin and check six things: the RTP, the volatility, the bet range, the features and bonus rounds, the maximum win, and the layout and theme. Together they tell you how the game is designed to pay, how much each spin costs and what happens on the reels, so you can pick a game that fits how you want to play. None of them tells you when a game will pay; they describe its design over a very large number of spins. This guide goes through each check, where to find it and a few things that do not help you choose.
1. RTP
RTP (return to player) is the share of all money staked that the game is designed to pay back over a very large number of spins, for example 96%. It is a long-run average across all players, not a forecast for your session. Some games come in more than one RTP version, so read the figure shown in the game itself. Slot RTP and volatility explained covers how to read it.
2. Volatility
Volatility describes how wins are spread out:
- Low volatility: smaller wins that come more often.
- High volatility: wins come less often but can be larger, and longer runs without a win are normal.
- Medium: somewhere in between.
Two games with the same RTP can feel very different because of volatility. Many providers show it as a scale or a number of icons on the info screen.
3. Bet range
Check the minimum and maximum bet per spin, and how the bet is set: some games use a total bet, others a coin value times lines. Pick a game whose minimum bet fits the amount you plan to play with, so that each spin is a small part of it. A higher bet per spin does not change the RTP; it changes how fast you go through your balance.
4. Features and bonus rounds
Read what the game does beyond the base spin:
- Bonus round type: feature spins, pick-and-reveal, wheel or respins.
- Trigger rule: for example three or more scatters, or a meter that fills up.
- Special symbols: wilds, multipliers and expanding symbols.
- Bonus Buy: whether the game lets you pay to start the feature straight away.
Slot bonus rounds explained describes the common round types and how they trigger.
5. Maximum win and paytable
The paytable shows what each symbol pays and the maximum win, often written as a multiple of the bet, such as 5,000x. A game with a high maximum win usually keeps a large part of its RTP in rare, big outcomes, which goes with high volatility. If you want steadier play, a lower cap and a flatter paytable often go together.
6. Layout, theme and info screen
- Reels and rows: for example 5x3, or larger grids.
- How wins are counted: fixed paylines, "ways" that pay on adjacent reels, or cluster and pay-anywhere wins.
- Theme and pace: art, sound and spin speed do not change the maths, but they decide whether you enjoy the game.
- Clear rules: a good info screen shows all of the above. If it is hard to find the RTP or the trigger rule, keep reading before you play.
What does not help you choose
- "Hot" or "cold" games. Each spin is independent. A game that paid a lot recently is not more or less likely to pay on the next spin.
- Time of day. The game's maths does not change with the clock.
- Near misses. Two bonus symbols and a third just above the line is still a normal losing spin.

FAQ
What should I check before choosing a slot game?
Before choosing a slot game, check six things: RTP, volatility, bet range, features and bonus rounds, maximum win, and the layout and theme. All of them are on the game's info screen. Together they show how the game is designed to pay and what each spin costs, not when it will pay.
Is a higher RTP slot more likely to pay today?
No, a higher RTP slot is not more likely to pay today. RTP is a long-run average over a very large number of spins and across all players, so it does not predict a single session. Each spin is independent, and some games come in more than one RTP version, so read the figure in the game.
What is the difference between low and high volatility slots?
Low volatility slots pay smaller wins more often, while high volatility slots pay less often but can pay more when they do. Longer runs without a win are normal on high volatility games. Two games with the same RTP can feel very different because of volatility, often shown as a scale on the info screen.
Where do I find a slot's RTP and rules?
You find a slot's RTP and rules on the game's info or paytable screen, usually opened from a menu or "i" button in the game. The paytable also shows what each symbol pays and the maximum win. If the RTP or the trigger rule is hard to find, keep reading before you play.
