Over/Under Explained: 2.5 Goals and Quarter Lines
An over/under bet is a bet on whether the total number of goals scored by both teams will be above or below a line set before the match, such as 2.5. Who wins the match does not matter; only the total does. Half-goal lines always produce a clear win or loss, whole-goal lines can refund the stake, and quarter-goal lines split it in half. This guide explains each type with score examples only, no odds.
What over 2.5 and under 2.5 mean
- Over 2.5: wins if the match has 3 or more goals in total.
- Under 2.5: wins if the match has 0, 1 or 2 goals in total.
A 2-1 result has 3 goals, so over 2.5 wins. A 1-1 result has 2 goals, so under 2.5 wins. Other half-goal lines work the same way: over 1.5 needs 2 or more goals, and over 3.5 needs 4 or more.
Whole-goal line (2)
On a whole-goal line, a total exactly on the line refunds the stake.
- 3 or more goals: over 2 wins and under 2 loses.
- Exactly 2 goals: both over and under are refunded.
- 0 or 1 goal: under 2 wins and over 2 loses.
Quarter-goal lines (2.25 and 2.75)
A quarter line splits your stake into two equal halves on the two lines either side of it, so it can end in a half win or a half loss.
Over 2.25 (half on 2, half on 2.5)
- 3 or more goals: both halves win.
- Exactly 2 goals: the half on 2 is refunded and the half on 2.5 loses, so you lose half.
- 0 or 1 goal: both halves lose.
Over 2.75 (half on 2.5, half on 3)
- 4 or more goals: both halves win.
- Exactly 3 goals: the half on 2.5 wins and the half on 3 is refunded, so you win half.
- 0, 1 or 2 goals: both halves lose.
Under bets mirror these. Under 2.25 wins half when there are exactly 2 goals, and under 2.75 loses half when there are exactly 3.
Which goals count
- Both teams' goals: a 3-0 and a 2-1 both count as 3 goals.
- Own goals: an own goal is part of the score, so it counts.
- Regular time: full-time over/under normally uses the score after 90 minutes plus stoppage time. Extra time and penalty shoot-outs normally do not count.
- First-half lines: a first-half over/under uses only the goals scored before half-time.

Over/under vs Asian handicap
Over/under is about the total number of goals; Asian handicap is about the margin between the two teams. A 3-2 match is a high total but a one-goal margin, so it can win an over bet and still lose a handicap bet on the stronger side. The quarter-line logic is the same in both, and Asian handicap explained uses the same score-only examples. For the other common markets, see what is a sportsbook.

FAQ
What does over/under mean in football betting? Over/under means a bet on whether the total goals in a match will be above or below a set line. The result of the match does not matter, only the total. Half-goal lines always produce a clear win or loss, whole-goal lines can refund the stake, and quarter-goal lines split it in half.
What does over 2.5 mean? Over 2.5 wins if the match has 3 or more goals in total. Under 2.5 wins with 0, 1 or 2 goals. A 2-1 result has 3 goals, so over 2.5 wins, while a 1-1 result has 2 goals, so under 2.5 wins. Both teams' goals count, including own goals.
What happens if exactly 2 goals are scored on over/under 2? The stake is refunded on both over and under. A total exactly on a whole-goal line is settled as a refund. With 3 or more goals, over 2 wins and under 2 loses; with 0 or 1 goal, under 2 wins and over 2 loses.
Do extra-time goals count for over/under? No, full-time over/under normally counts only goals in regular time, including stoppage time. Penalty shoot-outs normally do not count either, and a first-half over/under uses only the goals scored before half-time.
