What Is Dragon Tiger? Rules vs Baccarat

Dragon Tiger is a two-card game where the dealer deals one card to Dragon and one card to Tiger, and you bet on which card will be higher, or that they will tie. There are no points to add up and no third card: the higher card wins the round. It is often described as a faster, simpler cousin of baccarat. This guide covers card ranks, the bets, how ties work and the main differences from baccarat.

How a Dragon Tiger round works

  1. Place your bet on Dragon, Tiger or Tie while the betting window is open.
  2. The dealer deals one card face up to the Dragon spot and one to the Tiger spot.
  3. The higher card wins. Equal ranks are a tie.
  4. Settlement. Winning bets are paid and losing bets are collected, then the next round opens.

Card ranks

  • Ace is the lowest card.
  • 2 to 10 rank by their number.
  • J, Q and K rank above 10, with K the highest.

On the main bets, suits do not matter: a 9 of hearts and a 9 of spades are equal.

The bets

  • Dragon: the Dragon card will be higher.
  • Tiger: the Tiger card will be higher.
  • Tie: both cards will have the same rank.

Many tables also offer side bets, for example on a card's colour or on whether it is odd or even. The available bets and the payout for each are listed in the table's rules panel.

What happens on a tie

If both cards have the same rank, Tie bets win. What happens to Dragon and Tiger bets on a tie depends on the table: on many tables part of the stake is returned and the rest is lost. Check the rules panel of the table you join, because this is the rule that differs most between tables.

Two example rounds

  • Dragon 9, Tiger Q: the Queen ranks higher, so Tiger wins. Dragon and Tie bets lose.
  • Dragon 7, Tiger 7: same rank, so the round is a tie. Tie bets win, and Dragon and Tiger bets follow the table's tie rule.

Dragon Tiger vs baccarat

  • Cards per side: Dragon Tiger deals one card to each side; baccarat deals two or three.
  • How a hand is valued: Dragon Tiger ranks single cards with K highest; baccarat adds points and counts 10, J, Q and K as 0.
  • Third card: Dragon Tiger has none; baccarat follows fixed third-card rules.
  • Pace: with one card each, a Dragon Tiger round is over very quickly.
  • Ties: in both games a tie is its own bet, but how a tie affects the two main bets is set by each table.

If you already know baccarat, baccarat rules for beginners shows the points system Dragon Tiger leaves out.

Which card is highest in Dragon Tiger? K is the highest card in Dragon Tiger and Ace is the lowest. Cards 2 to 10 rank by their number, and J, Q and K rank above 10. Suits do not count on the main bets, so a 9 of hearts and a 9 of spades are equal, and two cards of the same rank make a tie.

How is Dragon Tiger different from baccarat? Dragon Tiger differs from baccarat in using one card per side, ranked from Ace to K, with no third card.
